Vinyl Composition Tile in Humble

Vinyl composition tile is the hard-wearing commercial tile found in school hallways and grocery aisles. At home, it earns its keep in laundry rooms, garage workshops and playrooms. We set it flat, roll it down tight and tell you up front what upkeep it needs before you decide.

What VCT is and when it fits

VCT is made from limestone filler, vinyl resin and pigment, pressed into one-foot squares roughly 1/8 inch thick. That makes a tile that shrugs off rough use, costs little per square foot and can be repaired one piece at a time. It is not waterproof like luxury vinyl tile, and it needs coats of polish to look its best.

The short answer: if the room gets hard use and you don't mind putting down fresh polish now and then, VCT is a good pick. If you want a wood or stone look with no polishing, luxury vinyl plank or luxury vinyl tile is the better call. We'll tell you which way we'd go and why.

Most homes around Humble sit on concrete slabs. That suits VCT well, as long as the slab is flat and dry.

What the job includes

Slab check and moisture test
Before we order tile, we run a straightedge across the slab and test it for moisture. High moisture breaks down the adhesive and tiles start to lift. If we find a problem, we show you and explain the fix.
Grinding and patching
VCT shows every dip, crack and ridge under it. We grind high spots and fill low ones with patching compound so the finished floor reads flat.
Removing the old floor
We pull up carpet, sheet vinyl or loose tile and scrape off old glue. If you have small 9-by-9 tiles from decades back, we'll tell you to have them tested before anyone disturbs them, since older tile and black glue can contain asbestos.
Layout and setting
We find the middle of the room and snap chalk lines out from there, so the partial tiles along opposite walls end up the same width. Adhesive goes down thin and has to tack up before tile goes on. Then we roll the whole floor with a heavy roller to seat every tile.
Polish coats
The factory coating on new VCT isn't meant to be the final surface. Once the adhesive has set, we clean the floor and put down several coats of floor polish so it's ready for use.
Base, transitions and cleanup
We set cove base or reinstall your baseboard, fit transition strips at doorways and haul away the old flooring and scraps.

Signs VCT is the right floor for the room

  • Your garage shop floor stains

Bare concrete soaks up oil, paint and dirt. VCT gives you a surface you can sweep and mop, and a ruined tile can be swapped out.

  • Playroom carpet keeps getting wrecked

Juice, paint and clay don't come out of carpet easily. VCT wipes clean and stands up to toy bins being dragged across it.

  • Laundry room vinyl is torn or curling

Old sheet vinyl tears near the washer and lifts at the seams. VCT handles the traffic, though we'll still talk about a drain pan if leaks are a worry.

  • Old tiles are cracked or popping loose

Loose tiles usually mean the glue failed or the slab moved. We find the cause first so the new floor doesn't do the same thing.

  • You want low cost and easy patching

If budget matters more than looks, VCT is one of the cheapest hard floors to put in. Keep a box of spare tiles and repairs stay simple.

How the job runs

  1. 1

    Phone call and measure

Give us a rundown of the room, the flooring that's down today and what goes on in there. Then we book a visit to measure and check the slab, and you get a written quote broken out line by line.

  2. 2

    Prep day

We move light furniture, take up the old floor and scrape, grind and patch the slab. Patch has to dry before tile goes down, so on bigger rooms prep and install can be separate days.

  3. 3

    Install day

We snap lines, spread adhesive, set tile and roll it. Our crew is insured, and we cover floors in other rooms along our path in and out.

  4. 4

    Polish and walkthrough

After the adhesive sets, we clean and polish the floor, set the base and walk the room with you. We'll show you how to care for it and when the next coat of polish is due.

What moves the price

VCT tile itself is cheap. Most of the cost is in prep and labor, so two rooms the same size can price out very differently. Here's what changes the number.

Room size and cuts
More square feet means more tile and time. A room with lots of corners, closets and door openings takes more cutting than a plain rectangle.
Slab condition
A flat, dry slab costs the least. Cracks, low spots, old glue or high moisture readings add prep work and materials.
Old floor removal
Carpet comes up fast. Glued-down tile or sheet vinyl takes longer to remove and scrape clean.
Pattern and colors
One color laid straight is quickest. Checkerboards, borders and accent colors take more layout time and more cuts.
Base and polish
New cove base, number of polish coats and transition strips at each doorway all add small line items.

VCT questions we hear

Something not covered here? (346) 253-1583

Is VCT waterproof?

No. The tile itself handles spills, but water can get through the seams and attack the adhesive if it sits. For a room that might flood or stay wet, luxury vinyl tile is the better choice.

How often does VCT need new polish?

In a busy room, plan on a fresh coat a few times a year, less in a quiet one. When it starts looking dull and scuffed, it's time. Damp mopping with a neutral cleaner keeps it looking good between coats.

Can you lay VCT over my old floor?

Usually not. VCT needs a flat, solid surface, and old vinyl or tile tends to show through or come loose. We almost always take the old floor up and prep the slab.

When can I walk on it and move things back?

Light foot traffic is fine once the polish dries. Give heavy appliances and furniture a day or two, and slide them on boards or pads so they don't gouge the new tile.

Does your warranty cover a VCT install?

Yes. All of our installations come with a 1-year workmanship warranty, and VCT is included. Say a few tiles work loose or gaps show up between them in that first year, and the cause is our installation. Give us a call and we'll return to fix it.
